Design Your Year: Planning Day 2015

Design Your Year Planning Day 2015

What if next year was the year your ideas took form?

What if next year you stepped out of the dark cloud of over-thinking and stepped into a year of purpose with a plan?

What if you had a road map for adventure, one that allows for following your nose but also keeps you from getting lost?

What if next year end you were able to look back and say, “Holy noodle! Look what I did!!”

Let’s Design That Year!

For years I’ve been designing, re-designing and re-re-designing how to make a plan for my year that was true to my heart, flexible for my soul and supported me in getting things done. With that vision in mind and a constant stream of refinements, my sister Shannon and I finally settled into something that really works. As the end of the year approaches, we set aside some planning time and go through the process of designing our year. We dream, we have fun and we get very clear on what we want for the year ahead. Even with our vastly different styles (my plan ends up held lightly on coloured cut-outs and Shannon’s is recorded, tracked and analyzed in Excel) we’ve found a process that works! I want to share it with you.

Who’s this workshop for?

Big Dreamers: Have a big dream that you want to bring to life? One that is so exciting you can’t wait to get started but so big you don’t know how to begin? How exciting – and also overwhelming! I’m a big believer in big dreams and I want you to move forward on yours next year. In this workshop you’ll have the opportunity to gently and lovingly ground that idea in an actual plan without every diminishing its grandeur and beauty. You’ll keep your eye on the big picture while working with manageable chapters each season.

Idea Generators: Have so many sparkling ideas that you don’t know how to choose, and hey, why should you have to? It sucks to let things go! The only problem is that holding them onto them all is exhausting! It’s like trying to hold a whole litter of puppies all at once – awesome but wow, you can’t do it forever! I don’t want you to give up any of your gorgeous ideas. What I do want for you is to end next year with a bunch of them that you can jump up and down about and say, “Complete!! Complete!!” This design plan allows you to make a bunch of choices for next year, to choose your personal perfect mix of tantalizing projects you want to bring to life. And the great news? Next year, you get to pick some more!

Wonderers: And what if you have absolutely no idea what you want to create next year or maybe just the wisp of a feeling that’s like a memory of a dream? Don’t despair. Let’s make next year the one where that wisp turns into a guide and then into a touchstone of your dream. When everything seems so tenuous and uncertain, it is a relief to have some structure, something to hold your explorations, your wonderings, your heart. We’ll start there and then play with the possibilities of what you’ve discovered.  Your design plan will allow you to start trying on possibilities, to live into what you’re discovering and make adjustments along the way. You’ll find more clarity with every step.

You! Wherever you are starting, whatever you are imagining for the year ahead, this workshop gives you the time, space and support to lay the foundations, to move into next year with intention, to create what you envision in the year ahead.

Designing Your Year Gives You…

  • Dedicated Time. It’s time to stop planning to make a plan and actually make one! Take the time now so you can spend next year living the life you want to live!
  • Structure & Support: You don’t have to figure it out alone! I’ll guide you through a step-by-step process. Whether you attend live or work with the recording, you have access to me if you get stuck or stymied!
  • A Repeatable Design Process: What you learn in the workshop you’ll be able to use again and again. You will leave with a useful new process in your toolkit.
  • Clarified Priorities: A plan built on the wrong foundations is not only doomed for failure but it also hurts! Your design plan will be built on the ground of what’s truly important to you – and the workshop will help you name what that is!
  • A Plan (not a Straightjacket):  You’ll leave with an intentional road map for the year ahead, one that keeps you focused and clear without being oppressive.
  • Your Word of the Year: What better time to discover your word of the year than when you’re immersed in the heart and soul of your plans for next year!
  • Peace of Mind: With a plan you have confidence in, you can let your mind rest. Knowing you’re ready to start next year with clarity, you can settle in and be present for the holiday season!

PS If you’re looking to list every to-do for every project and plot it into your schedule from now until New Years, this is not the workshop for you. We’ll be designing your year with an eye on your vision, a way to work in manageable pieces and a focus on what’s next. In my experience, the plan-it-all-in-advance approach leads to hair-pulling, anxiety and wasted effort. Life is an ever-changing mystery so our plans need to be organic and adaptable. If that sounds good to you, come and join us.

Discover Your Magic Words

JRS Words2

Words are powerful and the words we use to describe ourselves and the work we do matters.

Our words become incantations, adding layer upon layer of energy and meaning to our lives, to our world and to ourselves.

Let’s be intentional in our magic-making.

First, let’s discover the mojo that is already here, the energy that’s been invested and held. You can do this exercise for your self or for the work that you do in the world (and by this I mean your heart work, whether you’re being paid for it or not).

 Gathering

On a scrap piece of paper, give yourself some time to answer the following:

  • What words do you currently use to describe yourself/your work?
  • What words do others use to describe you/your work?

Feel free to do some research. Go back and look at emails, comments, letters, journals, even performance reviews. Anywhere you get feedback is a resource.

 Clearing

Looking at what you’ve gathered, are there words that take you off course? There may be some that have been with you a long time that no longer fit. There may be words that spring leaks in your energy or poke holes in your dreams. Mark the ones that you know you’d like to cast aside.

Take a special look at words that seem neutral. These “easy to ignore” words serve as filler in your spells and dilute your magic. Mark them to go.

Look for any that may be fool’s gold. These are the words that are shiny but have no resonance for you. As pretty as they are, when you hold them in your hands it’s clear: no mojo. Let them go.

To clear these words and their energy, marry intention with action. You can cross your marked words out with enthusiasm. Obliterate them completely with a Sharpie. You can cut them out of the page and recycle the pieces. You can rewrite them on one sheet and set them safely on fire. Choose your method of clearing and release.

Creating

What you are left with are words of potency. Notice the different kinds of energy they hold. There may be words that sparkle and words that whisper. There may be words that make you laugh and words that open your heart. Each word holds its own magic and in your unique combination, they hold they magic of you.

The words you have now are just the beginning. They have set the tone of the landscape as it is today (as did the the ones you’ve left behind). Now is your opportunity to add some new ingredients to the mix, to begin creating with the language of your dreams.

This week…

  • Look at your own writing (e.g. your journal, your blog, your emails) and see what magic words you find yourself using again and again and now want to consciously claim.
  • Listen for words that catch your heart and your ear. They can come from anywhere: songs, blogs, books, conversations.
  • Write down words that you would love for people to use to describe you/your work.

When you feel like you have a beautiful collection of words, words that make you perk up and beam, let yourself claim them by creating with them.

Create an art journal page that’s filled with your magic words. Paint each one on a rock until you have a gorgeous pile. Ink your words on a scroll and place it by your pillow. Use your words in a poem or a letter to yourself. Use them on your blog, on your sales page, in your pitch.

Say the magic words.

Let these words fill your life. Let them work their magic.

More and more let the words of your dreams become the language of you. This is their magic – and yours.

As I refine my own magic words, I’d love to hear what brought you to the studio. What were you looking for and what made you step in? Email me. I’ll be listening.

Creative Living with Jamie: Treasures

2014-11-17 Dawn

These days I feel like a little elf hard at work behind the scenes creating, creating, creating. I’m tucked in, watching the sunrise and the temperature drop, lighting up the studio with twinkie lights and inspiration. My plan is to bring you some wonderful support for creating a magical season and a brilliant new year!

Soon the Vision Card workshop will be available on-demand. It teaches you a creative practice that will help you discover and remember your touchstones for next year. This is a yearly practice for me and I adore it. I know you will too! Also, the Full Cold Moon is on her way and she invites us to dream of comfort and home. We’ll be using that as inspiration for our Full Moon Dreamboards this month and I’m getting the workshop ready now. Plus it’s been clear that people would love to get together for a planning day and so I’ve decided to host a Design Your 2015 workshop on December 5th. I’ll be posting details soon.

That’s where I’ve been channeling all of my creative effort and so I thought I’d continue the creative elf work and dig, dig, dig out of the Creative Living with Jamie archives and bring you some treasures you may have missed the first time around! When we moved into the new studio, we started from where we were and have slowly but steadily been bringing more and more over to the studio (as the Transcription Team knows – thanks, team!)

Creative Living with Jamie Podcast Treasures You May Have Missed!

Creative Living with Jamie: Gretchen Rubin

I became a big fan of Gretchen’s with her book Happier at Home: Kiss More, Jump More, Abandon Self-Control, and My Other Experiments in Everyday Life. It had a profound impact on me. I learned not only from what she was sharing but also by how she structured her explorations. I was so excited to have a chance to chat with her for the show. Listen to the show.

Creative Living with Jamie: Susan Piver

If you’ve been around the studio for a while, you know that Susan was my doorway to meditation. Out of the blue I suddenly knew this was something I was meant to explore and the Universe led me to Susan just as she was starting The Open Heart Project. Susan’s guidance and teaching has been a blessing. Listen to the Show:

Creative Living with Jamie: Flora Bowley

I met Flora at the World Domination Summit in Portland. We had a great chat and her warmth and openness inspired me to invite her on the show. Recently I relished a class that Flora offered at Lifebook. It was all about using non-traditional items for painting, like broccoli and mushrooms. It was delightfully tactile and possibility opening! Listen to the show

I hope that you enjoy these creative conversations and that they inspire some magic in you! Over the holiday season I’ll be sharing more of these as I bring them out of the archives and hang them up in our beautiful new studio.

If you’re looking forward to them, be sure to subscribe to the blog or join the studio for updates in the newsletter. These won’t show up in iTunes!
