Today: It’s time to focus on what you want to be sure to experience this summer as you start to get ready for fall. I’ve been noticing how a little bit of photography is inspiring me to create some oomph!

Being familiar with the tools and supplies for an art form gives every artist, beginner and experienced, confidence and ground on which to grow. When I enrolled in a collage intensive at art school, I was delighted to not only get a detailed list of required supplies but also to receive guidance on how to use them. We even had a whole demonstration just on adhesives! In this first In the Studio with Jamie video, I share with you everything I learned at art school about the tools and materials you need for collage.
Because I do share everything, this has turned into a long-ish video and so I thought it might be helpful to break it down into smaller sections for those of you who would rather watch a bit at a

Over the past year I have had the joy of creating art journaling/visual journaling classes for both 21 Secrets at Dirty Footprints Studio and Spectrum at Hali Karla Arts. I’d love to know if this is something you’d like to see here at Jamie Ridler Studios.
It’s been an intense 2 weeks of getting immersive, obsessive and working with the finite nature of time. As always, we talk through projects and challenges, this time discussing overworking and switching to new interests.
Today: I’ve made a video about collage materials and supplies and I’d love to hear – do you prefer one show or little bites? Plus, I share my new watercolour travel kit and one of the kittens makes a first appearance!
She said, walking in a circle around the seed,
Stalker with flowing sleeves, jangling bangles,
And a cigarette holder dangling from thin fingers,
Pointing with it, smoke trailing,
“Oh darling, no, no, no, you don’t look like
A dahlia to me!
Your lines are too compact, your form is too
Small and ovoid, your impact on the viewer
Is so slight! There is nothing
Dahlia-like about you at all!”
She took her flair, her jangles and her judgement
And moved on to her next critique subject.
The immobile seed was abandoned as the crowd
flowed after the eminent artiste, left to sit alone
quietly in its own essence.
Found by the cleaning lady after darkness had fallen, it was swept up.
She took it in, gave it what was needed:
Sun, air, light, water in abundance.
She took joy in waiting for it to sprout and grow,
Noticing each small change of form, color, texture,
And smiling.
The dahlia bloomed radiantly in its quiet corner
Until one day the eminence walked by and exclaimed,
“True beauty! Where have you been hiding! Now that’s a dahlia!”

Years ago, sitting in my mom’s living room, hanging out with her and my sisters, cutting and gluing, dreaming, chatting, I had no idea that a life-changing practice had entered into my life. Who would imagine that a simple, creative activity could open up the door to my dreams? Over the years, I have developed a practice of creating dreamboards that serve both as magical manifestation magnets and also as powerful reflecting pools. Tying their creation into the cycles of the moon adds a deeper dimension of discovery and builds our connection to the energy cycles around us.
