This Week on Creative Living with Jamie:

Katy Swift, Textile Artist

From Katy

“I worked in pharmacy for about 12 years until at the age of 29 lots of things happened and changed for me. My long term relationship came to an end and I became quite ill with depression. I  wanted things to be different but didn’t know how until a chance conversation with a colleague made me realise I could do anything.

I wanted to pursue textiles and ended up doing a 2 year Access Art course part-time before taking a place at University to study Textiles and Surface Design where I specialised in Knitted and Constructed Textiles. After 3 years of study, I left with an honours degree and started working as a freelance knitwear designer for a studio based in London. I have since sold designs in London, Paris, New York and Florence.

This year, in addition to my freelance work, I have returned to the work I developed during my final year degree project. This is a mens wear range of hand knitted sweaters using a yarn I created as part of the project. I am currently designing the 5th and final sweater within this collection before I start to approach potential retail outlets. I’m also starting to knit pieces of art that focus more on textures and colours of the material following a recent collaboration I was involved in. This gives me a place to play within my practice and allows me to explore my work and the effect of knitting.

365 Collage Journal Flip Through

In my 365 Collage Journal each page is a collage created to capture the mood and the events of the day. I’ll glue in images of what’s inspiring me or what’s in my heart. I’ll add photos and movie tickets, fortune cookie messages and receipts. Occasionally I’ll write a word or two but my intention is to create a visual record of these moments in time. I keep it easy and doable and am surprised at just how meaningful these journals become.

I have just completed my current journal and thought I would share this flip-through with you. Maybe it will inspire you to try this simple creative approach to expressing your heart and gathering your year.

If you’re interested in how to make your own, last year I shared more about the process: Create a 365 Collage Journal

Here’s the journal I use.
