Day 29: Inside ceramicist and artist Joan Gardy-Artigas’ farmhouse studios

I have to share with you that I have watched this video of artist Joan Gardy-Artigas’s farmhouse studios several times. I never get tired of walking through his space with him,  the grounds, the studios, listening to the birds and the grumbling of his voice. I hope you enjoy it too.

On the New Moon, I began a new blog series: 40 Days of Beauty, Goodness & Love, little moments of light to get us through a difficult time. If you get solace, peace and inspiration from this, please share with others who need the same.

Day 28: Letters Live – The Read a Letter Campaign

Letters not only allow us to connect with one another but they also capture that connection and that moment in time. Letters Live has been celebrating this medium for years by inviting performers to read letters aloud. Now they are inviting us to be a part of this process with their ‘Read a Letter’ campaign. I’ve shared all the details below and straight afterward you will find a shining example from Shaun Dooley to his children.

Dear Friends,

Hello. I hope this letter finds you in good spirits as we navigate this truly surreal crisis.

Since 2013, we at Letters Live have been inviting performers to bring letters to life in memorable venues around the world. With our ‘Read A Letter’ campaign, we’re opening the stage extremely wide and would love for the world (you!) to share letters to the heroes on the frontline; letters to relatives in need; letters to strangers who have stepped up and made a difference; letters to neighbouring families, streets, towns and countries; letters from teachers to their isolated pupils or to the parents who now find themselves home-schooling; letters to those in power; letters to a population crying out for words of comfort.

You could record yourself reading an important letter you have wanted to send, or a cherished letter you once received. It could be a favourite letter of yours that offers hope in our current crisis or a prescient warning too important to be ignored. It may simply be a favourite letter of yours that may brighten everyone’s day. (I am obliged to say that if you’re not reading your own letter, you must, please, ask the letter writer’s permission.)

So, all you need to do is this:

  • Film yourself reading a letter. Use your phone, just as I am.
  • If you’re camera shy, point your phone at something else while you read: the letter itself, the view from your window, your adorable dog.
  • Before you read the letter, tell us who it’s to and who it’s from, and if you can, tell us why you’ve chosen it.
  • Post the video to Twitter or Instagram or whichever corner of the internet you frequent, remembering to include the hashtag #ReadALetter and tag @letterslive so we can then share your reading. Alternatively, if you don’t use social media, send the clip to read@letterslive.com so we can share the letter for you.
  • Spread the word by nominating another person to write a letter.

That’s it. Thank you in advance for taking part.

Stay connected. Stay safe. Stay at home.

Yours in isolation,
Benedict, and all at Letters Live

Day 27: In the Studio with Corey D’Augustine ~ How to Paint like Yayoi Kusama

In this wonderful In the Studio series from the Museum of Modern Art, Corey D’Augustine shows how to create paintings in the style of various masters. In this video, he demonstrates the techniques used by Yayoi Kusama to create her infinity net paintings. Corey’s deep knowledge in both art history and practice makes this series a brilliant learning experience on many levels.

Day 26: One World Together at Home

UPDATE: The event has since passed. As of this writing, the best way to see any of the performances is to visit Global Citizen’s YouTube playlist.

You’ve probably heard about this by now but Lady Gaga has curated a massive event for all of us today. They have already raised money to help with the pandemic before the show even goes to air! One World: Together at Home will be streamed online starting at 2:00 pm EST plus shown on just about every network between 8:00 – 10:00 pm EST. Check your local listings or search for “How to Watch One World: Together at Home” to find your best access!

Day 25: Galen Hooks Presents Freestyle Roulette

Galen Hooks is a choreographer whose work I deeply admire. Not only has she created choreography videos that I watch again and again but in today’s inspiration she hosts an event called Freestyle Roulette in which dancers spin for a theme and a song and then improvise on the spot. The results are deeply individual and always fascinating. In this particular episode, be sure you watch the last one. It’s a beauty!

Day 24: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert – Raveena

“I just want to create this feeling of softness in the room, and community.”
Raveena

This morning my sisters and I were talking about what a comfort music is at this time. If you don’t know about NPR Music’s Tiny Desk concerts, welcome to a rabbit hole of beauty and joy. You can start with the soulful laidback jazzy tunes of Raveena.

What music are you enjoying right now?

Day 23: Morning Walk with Byron Katie

Depending on where you are, you may or may not be able to go out for a walk. In this video Byron Katie not only describes an approach to your walk, if you can take it, but also provides a visual walk for you to experience from wherever you are. I found it very calming to sit in my studio and go on this walk with her guidance and presence. I hope you will too.
