Day 39: Duolingo

I love languages! Maybe it’s because I grew up listening to my mom, aunt and grandma speaking Latvian. I never understood a word but I loved the sound of them talking in their mother tongue. It always made me feel safe and at home.

Over the past while, I’ve been working on learning both French and Spanish using the free app Duolingo. Right now I have had my longest streak every – over 50 days! It only takes a bit of time but I love feeling like I could at least say, “Hello, how are you?” when connecting with another person.

These days, when so many of us have an abundance of time at home, it feels good to focus on something that is simple,  meaningful and in the service of connection.

You can find Duolingo wherever you normally get apps. What language do you want to learn?

On the New Moon, I began a new blog series: 40 Days of Beauty, Goodness & Love, little moments of light to get us through a difficult time. If you get solace, peace and inspiration from this, please share with others who need the same.

Day 38: How to sing Rossini with Mark Elder (The Royal Opera)

What a gift it is when great artists invite us into the process, showing us what it means to learn, to work, to grow, to practice their particular art. I am spellbound by moments like this masterclass with Mark Elder working with and mezzo-soprano Rachel Kelly on how to sing Rossini using The Barber of Seville. There is so much here about rhythm, language and how artists work towards performance.

Day 37: Make a Quirky Bird with Willowing

I love the theme behind Willowing’s Quirky Bird: accepting ourselves quirks and all.  As most of us are spending quite a lot of time with ourselves, this seems like the perfect time to create a little mascot who reminds us of the beauty of who we are. Follow along with the demonstration or find your own way to create (and be) a quirky bird!

Day 36: Daschund Puppies

We’ve already enjoyed kittens! It’s only fair that we spend some time with puppies too! (Plus, if you explore LouLou’s channel you’ll see ducks, chickens, bunnies, sugar gliders and more!)

Day 35: Circles by Jane Davies

Jane Davies’ circles are the kind of art making that feels just right for this moment. Simple. Fun. Creative. Grab some papers, scissors, glue stick and markers and see how many kinds of circles you can create at your kitchen table!

Day 34: Scribd (This resource got me reading again!)

I have always loved books but for years I never found time to read. I felt so disconnected and so frustrated until I discovered the joy of audio books! Now I listen to books while I do my morning chores, while I do the laundry, when I go for a walk. My reading has increased exponentially!

One of the best resources I’ve found for both e-books and audio books is Scribd. It’s kind of like Netflix for reading. My sisters and I all use it and love it. It’s a paid resource but if you use my link you can get 60 days for free. Hopefully that will be another bridge of goodness for you well after our 40-day series draws to a close.

Discover Scribd here*.

*Note: This is an affiliate link but I’m really sharing because if you sign up with my link you get an extra free month. I share Scribd far and wide because it’s seriously my favourite service I’ve found in years! I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

PS Also check your library! Most offer access to e-books and audio books and many are being very generous with their lending policies these days.
